RESUMO

Understanding the spatial heterogeneity of soil available medium- and micro-elements in karst area can provide a valuable theoretical guideline for soil nutrient management of karst ecosystem. We collected soil samples at a soil depth of 0-10 cm using grid sampling (20 m×20 m) in a 25 hm2 (500 m×500 m) dynamic monitoring plot. We further analyzed the spatial variability of soil medium- and micro-elements and their drivers, with classic statistics analysis and geo-statistics analysis. The results showed that the average contents of exchangeable Ca and Mg and available Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and B were 7870, 1490, 30.24, 149.12, 1.77, 13.54, and 0.65 mg·kg-1, respectively. The coefficient of variation of the nutrients ranged from 34.5% to 68.8%, showing a medium degree of their spatial variation. The coefficient of determination of the best-fit semi-variogram models of each nutrient was higher than 0.90, except for available Zn (0.78), indicating a strong predictive power for the spatial variation of the nutrients. The nugget coefficients for all the nutrients were less than 50%, showing a moderate spatial correlation, and the structural factors played a pivotal role. The spatially autocorrelated variation was within the range of 60.3-485.1 m, among which available Zn showed the lowest range and the deepest fragmentation degree. The spatial distribution of exchangeable Ca, Mg, and available B were consistent, with contents in the depression being significantly lower than that in other habitats. The contents of available Fe, Mn, and Cu declined with the increases of altitude and were significantly lower on the hilltop than in other habitats. The spatial variation of soil medium- and micro-elements was closely related to topographic factors in karst forest. Elevation, slope, soil thickness, and rock exposure rate were the primary drivers of spatial variation of soil elements and need to be considered in soil nutrient management of karst forestlands.

Tree mortality is an important ecological process in forests. It is crucial to understand how tree mortality affects spatial patterns and interspecific associations for revealing the mechanisms of tree mortality and community dynamics. We employed the correlation method of spatial point pattern analysis to analyse the variations in spatial patterns and interspecific relations before and after mortality using data obtained from two surveys of a 25 hm2 plot in the Mulun National Natural Reserve, China. The results showed that most species had an aggregated distribution both pre- and post-mortality. The proportion of species with aggregated distribution reduced slightly post-mortality compared with that for pre-mortality. Increases in the number of species with random distribution at small scale indicated that tree death was not random. At the species level, there were significant positive associations between dead and live trees of the 13 common species at different levels of 0-30 m range, suggesting weak intraspecific and interspecific competition among dominant species. Pre- and post-mortality interspecific associations were mostly positive, which remained stable during the period of two surveys for most species, indicating that the community had reached a rather stable stage. Following tree mortality, the number of species with positive associations increased at 1-30 m scales, whereas the number of species with negative and no associations decreased at most scales. These results indicated that the pressure of interspecific competition was relieved to some extent after individual death.

Any bacterial infection of the genital tract after childbirth is called maternal puerperal infection. This infection accounts for 13% of pregnancy-related deaths and is the fifth leading cause of maternal mortality. Endometritis (postpartum uterine infection) has been associated with preeclampsia and maternal lethal bleeding in recent decades. In some studies, the presence of meconium in the amniotic fluid has been implicated in the development of endometritis. The study aimed to evaluate the association between interleukin-19 gene polymorphisms and maternal puerperal infection. In this study, 300 pregnant women with a gestational age of at least 37 weeks were studied. Patients were divided into two groups of 150 controls and cases. In the case group, amniotic fluid was impregnated with meconium, and in the control group, it was clear fluid. Both groups underwent cesarean section, and all received prophylactic antibiotics before surgery. Patients were evaluated for purpura infection in the first 40 days after delivery. Five ml of venous blood was taken from each patient and transferred to a tube containing EDTA anticoagulant. Genomic DNA was isolated using a particular kit. Then, the polymerase chain reaction was performed by the ARMS method. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and SPSS software version 19 in case and control groups. This study's results indicate no significant difference in the frequency of AG, GG, and AA genotypes at position rs2243191 and rs1028181 IL-19 gene polymorphism between patients with puerperal infection and the control group (P>0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed in the frequency of both G and A alleles in the mentioned situations between patients and the control group (P>0.05). Based on the results of this study, no significant relationship was observed between IL-19 gene polymorphism at rs2243191 and rs1028181 locus and puerperal infection.

Population genetic assessment is crucial for the conservation and management of threatened species. Xanthocyparis vietnamensis is an endangered species that is currently restricted to karst mountains in southwestern China and Vietnam. This rare conifer was first recorded in 2002 from northern Vietnam and then in 2013 from Guangxi, China, yet nothing is known about its genetic diversity nor ploidy level variation, although previous cytological study suggest that Vietnamese populations are tetraploids. There have been about 45 individuals found to date in Guangxi, China. Here, we genotyped 33 X. vietnamensis individuals using 20 newly developed, polymorphic microsatellite loci, to assess the genetic variability of its extremely small populations. The genetic diversity of X. vietnamensis (H E = 0.511) was lower than that of two other heliophile species, Calocedrus macrolepis and Fokienia hodginsii, which have similar distribution ranges. This is consistent with the signature of a genetic bottleneck detected in X. vietnamensis. Although the population genetic differentiation coefficient across loci is moderate (F ST = 0.125), STRUCTURE analysis revealed two distinct genetic clusters, namely the northern and southern population groups; DAPC analysis grouped the southern populations together in one cluster separate from the northern populations; AMOVA analysis detected a significant genetic differentiation between the two population groups (F RT = 0.089, p < 0.05), and BARRIER analysis detected a genetic barrier between them. Moreover, we detected differentiation in ploidy level between northern and southern populations, sampled individuals from the former and the later are all diploid and tetraploid cytotypes with mean genome sizes of 26.08 and 48.02 pg/2C, respectively. We deduced that heterogeneous geomorphology and historical events (e.g., human deforestation, Quaternary climate oscillations) may have contributed to population fragmentation and small population size in X. vietnamensis. Considering both genetic and ploidy level differentiation, we propose that two different management units (northern and southern) should be considered and a combination of in situ and ex situ conservation measures should be employed to preserve populations of this endangered species in southwestern China in the light of our findings.

Seed removal behaviors of rodents are largely influenced by microhabitat. Although the karst ecosystem is composed of a broad variety of microhabitats, we have no information on how they affect such behaviors. We investigated rodents' seed removal behaviors in four karst microhabitats (stone cavern, stone groove, stone surface, and soil surface) using three types of Kmeria septentrionalis seeds: fresh, black (intact seeds with black aril that dehydrates and darkens), and exposed (clean seeds without the aril). We show that Rattus norvegicus, Leopoldamys edwardsi and Rattus flavipectus were the predominant seed predators. Even though all seed types experienced a high removal rate in all four microhabitats, but rodents preferentially removed seeds from the three stone microhabitats (stone caves: 69.71 ± 2.74%; stone surface: 60.53 ± 2.90%; stone groove: 56.94 ± 2.91%) compared to the soil surface (53.90 ± 2.92%). Seeds that had been altered by being exposed to the environment were more attractive to rodents than fresh seeds (76.25 ± 2.20% versus 36.18 ± 2.29%). The seed removal behavior of rodents was significantly affected by the microhabitat and seed type. Finally, seeds that had fallen on the soil surface microhabitat incurred a lower predation risk than seeds fallen on other microhabitats, which increased their probability to germinate. Our results indicate that the lower predation rate of seeds from the endangered K. septentrionalis dropped on the soil surface increases trees' likelihood of survival.

Soil samples were collected from the depression (200 m x 100 m) in Karst area's Mulun National Nature Reserve by grid sampling method (20 m x 20 m), with the spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients analyzed by the methods of classic statistics and geo-statistics. The soil pH showed small variation, while the soil nutrients showed moderate variation, being in the order of available phosphorus (AP) > available potassium (AK) > available nitrogen (AN) > organic matter (OM) > total potassium (TK) > total phosphorus (TP) > total nitrogen (TN). Spherical model fitted best for soil pH, exponential model fitted best for soil TK and AK, and Gaussian model fitted best for other variables. The variation range of soil pH and AK was smaller, being 58.1 m and 41.1 m, respectively, that of soil OM, TN, TP, AN, and AP was from 100 m to 150 m, and that of soil TK was the largest (463.5 m). Soil TK and TN showed moderate spatial autocorrelation, while other soil nutrients showed strong spatial autocorrelation. Soil pH and AK presented fragmented patch distribution, showing high heterogeneity, while soil OM, TP, and TK changed gently, high in the middle and low in two sides. The spatial patterns of soil AN and AP were similar, i.e., increased with landform slope. Soil TN had a distribution pattern of low in the middle and high in two sides. Vegetation, topography, and high heterogeneity of micro-habitat were the main factors caused the differences of the spatial distribution patterns of soil nutrients in the Reserve.
